In the days before
- Tell your care team about all medicines you take, especially blood thinners, and do not stop any medicine unless you are told to
- Mention any allergies and any previous problems with anaesthesia
- Let your care team know if you develop a cold, fever or other illness before the operation
- If you smoke, stopping (even for a short time) can help your recovery
- Arrange for someone to take you home, and to stay with you if you are advised to
Prepare at home
- Have soft foods and plenty of fluids available, if advised
- Plan time off work or school as recommended
- Keep your care team's contact details somewhere easy to find
On the day
- Follow the fasting instructions you were given exactly
- Bring your documents, your medicine list and any reports you were asked to bring
- Leave valuables and jewellery at home
